Compare · Two different tools
Massage therapy vs physical therapy.
They're both fantastic — and they do very different things. This is a straight, honest explainer from a Connecticut-licensed clinical practice in North Haven so you can make the right call for your body.
Many of our clients see both. Physical therapy builds strength, coordination and long-term movement patterns. Clinical muscle therapy releases the tissue that's fighting that work in the meantime — so the exercises actually stick.
The core difference
PT is about progressive rehab — assess, prescribe, correct patterns, build strength. Clinical muscle therapy is about releasing the soft tissue and nervous system that keep locking you back into pain.
Primary focus
Release soft tissue, calm nervous system, restore mobility.
Rehab and strengthen muscles, joints and movement patterns.
Session shape
Hands-on bodywork + recovery technology in a private room.
Assessment, exercises, manual therapy, home program.
Frequency
Weekly to bi-weekly, then maintenance.
Structured plan of care — often 2–3x/week short-term.
Great for
Chronic tension, back/neck/shoulder pain, sciatica, headaches, sports recovery.
Post-surgery, ACL rehab, stroke recovery, gait/balance training.
Works well with
Physical therapy, chiropractic, personal training.
Muscle therapy, personal training, ergonomic changes.
How we complement PT
We regularly work with clients between or after their PT plan of care. Real hands-on release makes the strengthening and mobility work land faster.
Tissue release first
PT exercises are harder to execute when tissue is locked. We free it — then your PT work sticks.
Nervous system down-shift
PEMF, red light, infrared heat and slow bodywork drop guarding so your body actually rebuilds.
Superbills available
For clients using HSA/FSA or seeking out-of-network reimbursement.

Questions we hear a lot
Answers before you book.
Can I do both massage therapy and PT?
Yes — and most clients get better results doing both. Just let each provider know so care stays coordinated.
Do you take insurance?
We accept HSA/FSA and provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement.
Which should I start with?
If pain is acute or you have red flags, see your physician / PT first. For chronic tension, either is a solid starting point — many clients start with us to get relief, then use PT to build the lasting foundation.
How often should I come in while doing PT?
Most clients do well with a weekly or bi-weekly session during a PT plan of care.
