Medical massage vs deep tissue massage.
Both go deep. Both feel serious. But they're not the same session, and the right one depends on what your body actually needs. Here's the plain-English difference from a licensed clinical practice in North Haven, CT.
At Muscle Therapy Wellness Lounge, every session blends both — clinical, condition-focused work with real depth. This page will help you decide what to book, and how to talk about it when you call.
The short version
Deep tissue is about pressure and slow, deliberate strokes to break up chronic tightness. Medical massage is condition-focused — every technique is chosen to address a specific pain pattern or musculoskeletal issue.
| Medical Massage | Deep Tissue Massage | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Address a specific condition, injury or pain pattern. | Break up chronic muscle tension using deep, slow pressure. |
| How it's built | Clinical assessment, then a session designed around your issue. | Deep, sustained pressure across the whole area — style-driven, not condition-driven. |
| Techniques used | Deep tissue, myofascial release, cupping, Graston, PNF, trigger point — chosen for the case. | Slow deep strokes, sustained pressure, cross-fiber work. |
| Best for | Back pain, sciatica, whiplash, headaches, rotator cuff, post-injury. | General chronic tightness, weekly reset, athletic maintenance. |
| Practitioner | Licensed massage therapist trained clinically. | Any licensed massage therapist. |
| HSA/FSA & superbills | Usually yes. | Often no. |
How we do it in North Haven
Every session here is delivered by a Connecticut-licensed therapist and built around what your tissue actually needs the day you walk in. Deep tissue is one of many tools — cupping, heated Graston, myofascial release, PNF stretch, sub-occipital work and more are all in the room.
Assessment first
We identify the actual driver, not just the sore spot.
Depth without damage
Real pressure paired with pacing your nervous system will accept — that's why the release holds.
Recovery tech included
PEMF, red light, HydroJet, compression, robotic decompression and infrared sauna — layered in the same visit when useful.
HSA/FSA + superbills
For medical-style sessions we can provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement.

Questions we hear a lot
Answers before you book.
Is medical massage the same as deep tissue?
No. Medical massage is condition-focused — the therapist chooses techniques (which may include deep tissue) to address a specific issue like sciatica, whiplash, or shoulder impingement. Deep tissue is a style: deep, sustained pressure. Great sessions often use both.
Which one hurts more?
Deep tissue is usually more consistently intense across the whole area. Medical massage varies — sometimes deep, sometimes surprisingly gentle, depending on the case.
Will HSA/FSA cover it?
Medical-style sessions are commonly HSA/FSA eligible and we can provide superbills. Deep tissue as a stand-alone wellness session may not be.
Which should I book for back pain or sciatica?
A medical/clinical session — that's what we specialize in. Book Signature Muscle Therapy and mention your issue when you arrive.
Can I combine them?
Yes — most of our sessions do. Deep tissue technique inside a clinically designed session is our default.
