Sports massage vs Swedish massage.
One is built for relaxation. The other is built for performance. Here's the plain-English difference from an athlete-focused clinical practice in North Haven, CT.
If you train, run, lift, golf, or compete in a sport, sports massage is almost always the right pick. If you're stressed, tight from sitting, and want to melt into the table — Swedish is beautiful. We'll help you choose.
The core difference
Sports massage is performance and recovery focused. Swedish is relaxation focused. Both are wonderful — but they're not interchangeable.
| Sports Massage | Swedish Massage | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Support performance, prevent injury, speed recovery. | Deep relaxation, stress relief, general well-being. |
| Pressure | Moderate to deep, sport-specific. | Light to moderate, long flowing strokes. |
| Techniques | PNF stretch, cross-fiber, trigger point, myofascial, sport-specific work. | Effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement. |
| Timing | Pre-event, post-event, in-season maintenance, off-season deep work. | Anytime you want to reset the nervous system. |
| Best for | Runners, golfers, lifters, cyclists, weekend warriors. | Chronic stress, sleep support, general body-mind reset. |
How we build a sports session
Every sports-massage session is customized to your sport, your event calendar, and where your body actually is that day. Pre-event work is short and stimulating. Post-event and off-season work goes deep.

Questions we hear a lot
Answers before you book.
Which one should I book?
If you're an athlete or physically loaded — sports massage. If you want to relax and de-stress — Swedish. Not sure? Book Signature Muscle Therapy and tell us your goal; we'll build it around you.
Do you offer pre-event and post-event sports massage?
Yes — with different techniques, intensity and timing for each.
How often should athletes come in?
In heavy training blocks, weekly to bi-weekly. In-season, every 2–3 weeks for maintenance. Around competition, a pre-event and a post-event session is ideal.
Do you work with golfers specifically?
Yes — we also run the Activate Golf Lab. Ask about golf-specific mobility.
